Navigating the Indie Author Vending Scene: Trials, Errors, and the Quest for the Perfect Event

Being an indie author and artist is an incredible journey, but it’s also filled with trial and error, especially when it comes to finding the right events to vend at. Over the years, I’ve packed up my books, art, and merch, setting up shop at a variety of conventions, craft fairs, book festivals, and everything in between. Some have been a dream, with engaged audiences excited about my work, while others… well, let’s just say I learned a lot.
The Challenge of Finding the Right Fit

Every event comes with a different crowd and a different energy. Book fairs? Great for connecting with readers, but they often focus on traditional publishing. Comic cons? Fantastic for artists, but selling books alongside pop culture memorabilia can be hit or miss. General craft fairs? A wonderful atmosphere, but sometimes readers aren’t in the mindset to discover a new fantasy world while shopping for homemade candles. It’s all about trial and error, and while some events have been great, others have been total flops. It’s a constant learning process, figuring out where my books, art, and bookish merch truly belong.
The Emotional Toll of a Flop Event

Let’s talk about the reality of an event going wrong. Imagine the excitement of preparing for a big weekend: packing inventory, crafting a beautiful display, spending money on travel, lodging, and booth fees, all with the hope that this will be a game-changer. And then… nothing. The turnout is dismal. People walk by without stopping. The sales don’t even cover the cost of the trip. You watch the hours tick by, trying to keep a smile on your face, knowing that at the end of the day, you’re walking away at a loss.
It’s more than just financial; it’s emotional. It’s the sinking feeling of wondering, Did I make the wrong choice? Should I have known better? Is this even worth it? The truth is, every indie creator faces this at some point. Some events are unpredictable, and sometimes, despite all the research and planning, they just don’t work out. But those tough experiences fuel the search for the ones that do.
A Fresh Start in 2025: New Events, New Hope
Despite the setbacks, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of fresh opportunities. I’m diving into a whole new lineup of events, trying out different conventions, fairs, and book festivals in the hopes of finding my niche. There are promising events on my radar, and I’m determined to refine my vending strategy, connect with the right audiences, and find the spaces where my books and art truly belong.
This year, I’m also expanding my bookish bugs, which combine my love of storytelling with my love of insects! These art pieces, inspired by creatures like the stunning Madagascan sunset moth, bring a whimsical and magical touch to my table. Whether you're a fantasy lover, an art collector, or just someone who appreciates a unique blend of nature and storytelling, these little creations are becoming some of my favorite things to share at events.
